This course is for Level III Texas Private Security Board security officer handgun or shotgun requalification. Participants must bring a handgun and 50 rounds of ammunition, but if you do not have a handgun, GTAS provides free rental 9mm handguns and shotguns for your convenience. Be sure to let us know during registration if you would like to use one of our firearms.
Please remember to bring your driver’s license or state ID if you do not have a driver’s license.

The firearms qualification course of fire is listed below:
Handgun:
During the qualification test, a total of 50 rounds will be fired. To successfully pass, participants must achieve a minimum score of 70%, which equates to 175 points out of a possible 250.
The course utilizes a B-27 target, a human-shaped silhouette measuring 45 inches by 24 inches.
All firing will be conducted from the ready position, meaning the firearm is already in the shooter’s hands and properly aimed. No holster draw or concealed carry shooting is required for this qualification.
Handgun course of fire:
3-Yard Line – 20 Rounds
- 1 shot in 2 seconds, repeated 5 times (5 rounds)
- 2 shots in 3 seconds, repeated 5 times (10 rounds)
- 5 shots in 10 seconds, fired once (5 rounds)
7-Yard Line – 20 Rounds
- 5 shots in 10 seconds, fired once (5 rounds)
- 1 shot in 3 seconds, repeated 5 times (5 rounds)
- 2 shots in 4 seconds, fired once (2 rounds)
- 3 shots in 6 seconds, fired once (3 rounds)
- 5 shots in 15 seconds, fired once (5 rounds)
15-Yard Line – 10 Rounds
- 2 shots in 6 seconds, fired once (2 rounds)
- 3 shots in 9 seconds, fired once (3 rounds)
- 5 shots in 15 seconds, fired once (5 rounds)
Note: For handgun qualification, an armed security officer must carry only the caliber they are qualified with. In other words, if you qualify with a 9mm handgun, you may carry any make or model chambered in 9mm, such as Smith & Wesson, Sig Sauer, H&K, Glock, Ruger, Staccato, Kimber, Beretta, Colt, and others. However, you may carry only one caliber at a time. If you want to carry a different caliber in the future, you must first qualify with that caliber.
Shotgun:
RULE $35.146 SHOTGUN COURSE OF FIRE
(a) Any commissioned security officer licensed by the department who, in the performance of his/her duties, has a shotgun available to assist in the protection of life or property must demonstrate proficiency to a department approved firearms training instructor by successfully completing the course of fire for shotgun training. The course of fire shall consist of nine rounds of nine (9) pellet "00" buckshot (no slugs) fired as detailed in this section:
(1) From a standing position at a distance of fifteen (15) yards, three (3) rounds of "00" buckshot in twelve (12) seconds;
(2) From a standing position at a distance of ten (10) yards, three (3) rounds of "00" buckshot in ten (10) seconds;
(3) From a standing position at a distance of five (5) yards, three (3) rounds of "00" buckshot in ten (10) seconds; or
(4) An alternate course of fire may be approved by the director upon receipt of written application.
(b) A biennial familiarization of six (6) rounds of "00" buckshot shall be required for renewal of a commissioned security officer. The course of fire shall be as outlined in subsection (a) of this section reducing the number of rounds from three (3) to two (2) with a commensurate halving of time in each category (c) The category for any shotgun is STG
Note: Texas Lev III security officers are not allowed to carry rifles.
